Wanaka AFC senior team made it three wins in a row with a 4-2 victory over Queenstown Classic AFC at Jacks Point on Saturday (1 August).
The Classic drew first blood with a goal just three minutes into the game courtesy of some lapse defending by Wanaka gifting an open goal for an easy tap-in.
Wanaka hit back to even the game 10 minutes later with a fantastic goal that started with
some nice work from the midfield and a beautiful ball from center-mid Scott Mitchell which found the feet of right-back Brandon Dickson making a beautiful overlapping run down the right flank. A perfectly placed cross-kick found center-forward Joe Ellis who had the goalkeeper right on top of him but managed to get his foot to the ball and put it in the back of the net.
The sides then traded goals before half-time. Wanaka’s was an outstanding free kick by Mike Finlay from just outside the box. The ball looked to have been pushed over the bar only for it to dip late in flight into the top right corner.
Half time 2-2.
Wanaka settled quickly in the second half and dominated the midfield. They were rewarded with a goal to captain Sebastian Arratia from a corner kick delivered in by Alex Whitehead with pinpoint accuracy.
Wanaka continued to exert pressure and scored their fourth goal through Joe Ellis with 10 minutes remaining.
Both Wanaka AFC Central Otago League teams are at home this Saturday at the Recreation centre for their last game of the season. WAFC Youth are at 12:45pm and the WAFC Senior team at 2:45pm.
The Wanaka Premiers play away against bottom of the table Northern in the Southern Premier League.
