Sport and recreation showcase returnsThe Festival of Sport & Recreation is taking place on September 24.

The Festival of Sport & Recreation is returning to Wānaka this September after a two-year hiatus due to Covid-19.

The festival is billed as a free, fun day out where the community can come together to showcase and celebrate all the sport and recreation opportunities in the Upper Clutha.

Clubs and organisations gather to showcase their sports with demonstrations, games and events for all ages.

The festival’s new coordinator, Mylrea Bell, said 50-or-so groups will be on-site during this year’s September 24 festival to showcase their activities and offerings.

“Organisations will have displays and members on hand to give information about their activities and how to get involved,” Mylrea said.

“...some high level speakers and elite athletes will be celebrated, and the day will revolve around have-a-go style opportunities.”

Crowd favourite game ‘Dye Dash’ will also return in 2022.

A working group has been formed to help bring the event to life and anyone who is willing to offer their time or skills is encouraged to get in touch with Mylrea.

Upper Clutha Sports Community Trust trustee and festival instigator Bronwyn Coers said the festival was lucky to have Mylrea on-board to help deliver the festival.

“Her creativity and business connections lift the event to another level,” Bronwyn said.

Mylrea said she was excited to be part of the event: “The Festival of Sport & Recreation is an excellent and enjoyable activity to increase awareness of our extensive local opportunities.”

The seventh Festival of Sport & Recreation will take place at the Wānaka Recreation Centre on September 24.
