Local trail runner wins world’s oldest trail raceUltra runner Ruth Croft won one of the world's toughest ultra-marathon races the Western States 100 in the United States.

Wanaka-based professional trail runner Ruth Croft was the first female to finish at the Western States Endurance Run in California last Sunday (June 26).

The race is described as one of the world’s toughest races, taking place in searing heat, and Ruth’s time of 17 hours 21 minutes and 30 seconds was the third fastest by a woman in the race’s 49-year history.

“For this Western States, the key element which makes it quite special is the heat that you deal with,” Ruth told Radio New Zealand.

“I was just focusing on myself, getting to those aid stations and doing all the little things right.”

Originally from the West Coast, Ruth lives in Wānaka when it’s not racing season (from November to May).

“I run all over when I’m home,’ she told the Wānaka App last year. “I like Roy’s Peak, Grandview, Isthmus - even the Outlet Track. It’s a great place to live when you’re a trail runner.”
