Roads reopening as weather system clears

Roads around the region are reopening today as the weather system which disrupted the country over the past twenty-four hours moves east.

The Crown Range opened at 1pm today and the Lindis Pass opened late this morning. Both alpine passes have snow warnings in place until 4pm this afternoon but it is not expected to impact the roads. Chains are to be carried.

State Highway 8 (SH8) between Twizel and Fairly is closed at the time of writing however Waka Kotahi expects it to open this afternoon. Some stuck trucks had to be towed off Burkes Pass and from SH8 either side of Tekapo this morning.

The Haast Pass has been disrupted by low hanging branches which were impacted by snow last week and work is in progress to clear them. Travellers on this route should expect delays.

Travellers are advised to take extra care while these routes return to normal and to carry chains on all alpine passes.
