The Lindis Pass is part of the inland route between Christchurch and Wānaka. It reaches 965 metres above sea level at the summit, making it the second highest local sealed alpine pass (behind the Crown Range 1076 metres).
State Highway 8 over the Lindis Pass can experience severe alpine winter conditions, with heavy snow and frequent ice. This area of tussock-covered mountains is quite spectacular and especially so with a dusting of snow.
