About the Crown Range

The Crown Range is a spectacular 69km drive between Wanaka and Queenstown on the Crown Range Road. Renowned for its beautiful views and epic scenery the road traverses New Zealand's highest sealed alpine pass at 1076m.

In winter (May-October) the road is often covered by snow and susceptible to ice. Extreme care is required when driving the road at this time of year and snow chains must be carried. The Crown Range is rarely closed but often winter conditions are challenging for inexperienced drivers and the alternative Kawarau Gorge route is a safer option.

The Crown Range has a webcam at the summit. You can view the Crown Range Webcam here.

The Crown Range boasts wonderful views from its summit and at other designated vantage points, all of which make a great stop for a photo. Views include the Remarkables Mountain Range, Arrowtown and the Wakatipu Basin.

The road takes you through the historic mining town of Cardrona. Take the opportunity to explore the Cardrona Hotel, one of New Zealand's oldest and most iconic hotels. It is rumoured to be the most photographed building in New Zealand, the historic facade hides an award-winning restaurant, legendary beer garden and charming hotel rooms.

The road is a comfortable drive if taken patiently. It winds and zig zags in places so speed will be lower than normal. The road can also be a busy thoroughfare so be prepared for slower traffic. There is only one passing bay which is situated approximately 5km south of the Cardrona Township. This passing bay is only available to traffic travelling in the direction of Wanaka to Queenstown.

Take your time and enjoy this beautiful drive.
