Local rabbit control operations start todayThe rabbit control operation will require up to three toxic applications.

Rabbit control operations will begin from today (Monday July 19) in several locations around Wanaka and Albert Town.

Toxic pindone carrot baits will be placed on the ground in four locations in operations being undertaken by Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) and other agencies.

Locations will include near the southern edge of the Clutha River by Albert Town, including Templeton Park and the Cardrona River Mouth; north of the Albert Town Bridge (Albert Town Reserve); near the Outlet (Clutha River Reserve); and on land near Waterfall Creek (Damper Bay Lakeside Recreation Reserve).

“It is strongly advised not to enter any of these areas during the application of bait,” QLDC said in a statement.

“Some walking tracks and areas will be closed for the duration of bait sowing and will be reopened once complete. If people do enter these sites, please exercise caution during the application of bait.”

“If near an area in which the rabbit control operation is underway, dog owners should keep their dogs under close control or on a leash.”

Tracks and access points near rabbit control operation locations will be clearly signposted.

The operation is expected to require up to three toxic applications, each estimated to be one week apart.
