Wastebusters has shared some simple tips for reducing plastic use that anyone can try - a timely reminder during Plastic Free July.

Plastic Free July is a global movement where participants commit to reducing or eliminating plastic waste from their lives for the month of July. The movement aims to raise awareness of the number of single-use plastic items that are part of everyday life and help people make ongoing changes to their consumption habits.

Whether or not you’ve been taking part in Plastic Free July, these tips - shared by Wastebusters’ Abbey Lewis - can make a big difference to your plastic consumption overall.

Try out a new habit

Instead of trying to do everything, focus on a couple of changes that you think you could keep up for the rest of the year.

Start with addressing the top polluters

Try starting with the four biggest ocean polluters: single-use bags (e.g. bags for fresh produce), plastic bottles, food containers, food wrappers.

Pack a day bag

Putting together a day bag can mean you're always prepared with your reusables. Include a cup, container, cutlery, shopping bag(s), and then keep it somewhere handy to grab every time you leave the house.

Give feedback

Ask companies what they’re doing about plastic-free alternatives. Giving feedback through social media is powerful too - positive as well as negative.

Learn to love bulk bins (and loose tea)

Look for shops that sell food from bulk bins and allow you to use your own containers (see the Plastic Free Wanaka website for local details). Get your pantry and household items without the packaging and often at a fraction of the price. If you love tea you should know that plastic loves to hide in tea bags. One of the best ways to avoid sipping on polypropylene (and then putting it in the soil) is to get hold of some loose leaf tea.

Swap cling wrap for beeswax wraps or reusable containers

Long-lasting, easy to make, and quick to clean, beeswax wraps are a great alternative to cling film on your bowl of leftovers (or just use a plate, tea towel, or reusable container).
