Heavy snow expected to disrupt Labour Weekend travel

The MetService has issued a heavy snow warning for the Queenstown Lakes district from early tomorrow (Saturday October 26) morning until midnight tomorrow night.

The ‘Orange’ warning is for 20-40cm of snow above 600 metres with heavy falls expected to disrupt travel on the Crown Range and Lindis Pass.

Snow may fall as low as 400 metres in places.

A deepening low over the Tasman Sea approaches the South Island on Saturday. An associated front, preceded by strong northerlies and rain, is forecast to cross northern and central New Zealand.

Meanwhile, another front directs cool and moist easterlies over the South Island, with significant snowfall likely above 600 metres from Canterbury southwards.

In addition, rain is forecast to be heavy at times below the snow level.

The MetService says there is little chance of the Orange warning being upgraded to Red.

Travel disruption and damage to trees and powerlines are possible. Cold conditions may cause stress for livestock.

The MetService advises people in the region to prepare for snow, cold temperatures, and possible power outages. Drive cautiously, and ensure you have snow chains, sleeping bags, warm clothing, and emergency items.
