Young basketballers score gold The winners of the SIPT 5x5 development grade.

Two teams of young Wānaka basketball players brought back gold medals from the South Island Primary Basketball Tournament (SIPT) in Rangiora during Easter, exceeding their coach’s hopes.

Aspiring Basketball Academy coach Beth Mackie said the goal was to finish in the top half of the pool and make playoffs.

“The boys definitely exceeded those expectations,” she said.

The year 7-8 boys’ team won the 5x5 development grade, finishing second in their pool and making it to the top four playoffs.

“In the final Ollie Wright hit a three-point buzzer beater to tie the game, sending it to overtime.

Koby Ewing scored the golden point to win the game for us in overtime,” Beth said.

The year 5-6 3x3 team won the 3x3 development grade, with the final game going to overtime.

“They won by one point in a very exciting game,” Beth said. “The boys kept their cool and Dusty Baker scored the game winner.”

“This was our third year entering 3x3 teams and the first time we made it to playoffs, let alone finals, and clinched the number one spot.”

Beth said there were more games this year than in previous years.

“I was very proud of the boys and their focus across the three days and seven games,” she said.

“The feedback from the parent support was also excellent with regard to the boys’ attitude off the court as well. They are a great group.”
