Chur Cuzzy has capped off a dominant season in the A grade of Wanaka Touch with a convincing 9 try to 3 win in the grand final of Wanaka Touch on Friday night (February 26).
Chur Cuzzy’s win left the team undefeated throughout the season and claimed its third championship in a row after winning the competition in 2020 and 2019.
The final, officiated by national referees John Dustow, Kirsten Wyatt and Richie Heap, was one of the more competitive matches Chur Cuzzy encountered this year where they’ve averaged just one try against per game.
“We’re all pretty stoked, the season has been awesome and the team really knows each other well. It helps that we have a few superstars in the team,” said a delighted Chur Cuzzy’s Ollie Jarvie after the match.
Touch organiser Nathan Simon said the competition was fully subscribed this year with 30 teams.
“We were at absolute capacity and it’s great to be back at the clubrooms [Pembroke Pavilion]. Fortunately Covid didn’t hit us and we had great weather so we got the full season in,” he said.
Nathan said there are a lot of volunteers who make touch a popular sport in the Upper Clutha and he singled out the referees for their commitment this season.
“Without them we wouldn’t have a competition and the standard of refereeing is getting better all the time which really helps the sport.”
Wanaka Touch has more than 500 players across junior and senior grades and is supported by Jennian Homes Wanaka.
