The owner of a world-first wave park at Hāwea Flat says he hopes to open to the public this Easter.

YourWave is the brainchild of Hāwea Flat resident Ross McCarthy and once open it will be the only stationary wave machine of its type on the market.

“Our biggest point of difference … is we are a fully adjustable wave,” Ross told The Outlet Podcast.

“We basically deflate some pressure and increase other pressures to create different shaped waves.”

Ross said the wave is in final testing along with health and safety checks.

“We want people to surf exciting waves in a safe environment,” he said.

“Our motto is to give people who’ve never surfed before a really cool, adrenalin filled, exciting day surfing waves.”

The attraction is based on Ross’s family farm at Hāwea Flat and uses water from the bore on the farm.

“One of the best features about putting YourWave on a farm is the fact that we can circulate irrigation water through the unit which means we do not need to treat the water or use chlorine,” Ross told the Wānaka App in 2022.

“It gets pumped through the wave before going back out onto the farm through the irrigation system.”
