Te Kura O Take Kārara students got the opportunity to create art with two local artists earlier this week.

On Tuesday (May 24) artists Martin Hill and Philippa Jones met with students from the Wānaka school and together they created an environmental sculpture at Bremner Bay.

Teacher Estelle Moore said she was grateful to Martin and Philippa for making time to collaborate with the students.

“As teachers who are connectors and triggers, we jump at any chance to have our students learn in partnership with our local community while exploring our natural environment,” Estelle said.

“There is no substitute for the deep learning that unfolds through building a connection to our people and place.”

Martin and Philippa’s award-winning work - designing, constructing and photographing ephemeral sculptures that explore concepts of circular economy through the circularity of nature - has taken them all over the world.

Estelle said the students were “so lucky” to learn from them in the local environment.

“Our school community wants our students to interact with our natural environment responsibly and maintain and sustain natural resources,” Estelle said.

“Working with Philippa and Martin at Bremner Bay to create an environmental sculpture is this concept in action. Their work is a visual representation of environmental sustainability.

“How lucky are our kids to soak up these values in this place.”
