The MetService says a front moving over the region today (Thursday September 12) will be followed by a cold southwest flow bringing heavy snowfall.
A snowfall warning is in place for the Crown Range and Lindis Pass overnight tonight and Friday morning.
The NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) is warning travellers to be prepared for heavy rain and snow.
“Please be prepared for winter driving conditions overnight tonight and on Friday,” NZTA journey manager Tresca Forrester said.
“People may think it is spring now and warming up, but we still need to be prepared for winter driving - carry tyre chains, [and] expect road restrictions or closures…and have blankets and snacks in the car.”
Snow is expected to impact the Crown Range after 7pm tonight with 3-8 centimetres accumulating above the Cardrona township (500 metres) and lesser amounts as low as Wānaka (300 metres).
Heavy snow is forecast for the Lindis Pass with 10-20 centimetres expected to accumulate above 500 metres and lesser amounts to 300 metres.
Travellers are advised to carry chains and keep an eye on the latest Roads report.
