The roundabout currently under construction at the Capell Avenue and Domain Road in Lake Hāwea will improve safety for road users, Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) says.
QLDC property and infrastructure general manager Tony Avery said the project, once complete, will feature both a new roundabout and a pedestrian refuge crossing, replacing the T-intersection previously in place.
“...the new roundabout at Capell Avenue and Domain Road is another opportunity to deliver simple but effective solutions for the safety of all road users in the Upper Clutha,” he said.
The project is the latest of a programme of works between QLDC and Waka Kotahi New Zealand Transport Authority to improve safety for road users in the area.

It also includes an upgrade of the intersection at Aubrey Road and Anderson Road, which reopened recently.
Design is underway for a roundabout at the intersection of Riverbank Road and Ballantyne Road, the third in the project.
The Hāwea roundabout is expected to be completed by late March.
Tony thanked road users for their patience while the construction work takes place.
“The closure to Domain Road and other traffic management options are likely to cause some inconvenience, but once complete, I’m confident the new roundabout here will greatly improve what is currently quite a confusing intersection for all users to navigate,” Tony said.
The cost of the roundabout is being shared by Waka Kotahi and QLDC.
Contractors HEB Construction are carrying out the work.
