Queenstown Airport has been named Large Airport of the Year (more than two million passengers per year) at the 2025 New Zealand Airports Awards in Blenheim.
Chief executive Shane O’Hare, who joined the airport last month, said it was an honour to accept the award on behalf of the team this week (Tuesday October 7).
“In my short time in the role, I’ve been impressed by the exceptional quality of work being done and the calibre of the team,” he said.
The award recognises operational excellence and major achievements over the past year, including the installation of Australasia’s first engineered materials arresting system (EMAS) - a major safety investment completed ahead of schedule and under budget.

Judges also praised the airport’s innovation and community engagement, including the launch of the ZQN Community Fund, which distributes $50,000 annually to local charities.
Queenstown Airport was also part of the Southern Way partnership, which won the Commercial Initiative of the Year Award for strengthening aviation connections across the lower South Island.
