Crimeline: LandSAR drone used in search for missing manWānaka Police PST Sergeant Darren Cranfield

Over the weekend, police and Wānaka LandSAR conducted another search for the missing Argentinian man who disappeared in the Rob Roy Stream area in February.

Wānaka Police PST Sergeant Darren Cranfield said the search “utilised the full range of volunteer expertise, including canyon and swiftwater rescue teams, ground search teams, search dogs”.

“A key focus of the operation was the deployment of the new Wānaka LandSAR drone team - this was their first operational use of the asset,” he said.

“Unfortunately, the search did not locate the missing person.

“Police would like to extend sincere thanks to all the LandSAR volunteers and their families for their ongoing commitment and contribution to these complex and challenging operations.”

Darren said police have received several theft complaints from retail stores throughout the week.

“Store security cameras and CCTV footage are assisting with a number of ongoing enquiries into these matters.”

Over the weekend, the Alcohol Impairment Team travelled to Wānaka, where three drivers were apprehended for excess breath alcohol on one of the evenings.

“Police would like to remind motorists that if you drink and drive, you will be caught. If you are planning a night out and intend to consume alcohol, please make prior arrangements for a safe way home,” he said.

Driving complaints continue to be an ongoing issue in the area, Darren said.

“An example from this week involved reports of a motorist driving in a dangerous manner; thanks to calls from the public, police were able to intervene, and the rental company subsequently cancelled the driver’s agreement, preventing further risk on the road.”

He encouraged members of the public to report any dangerous or unsafe driving by calling 105.

Police are also investigating the theft of a courier package from a residential property, captured on home CCTV, he said.

“We ask residents to remain vigilant - if you see a courier delivering to a neighbouring address, please take a moment to ensure that no one enters the property immediately afterward. If you witness any suspicious behaviour, call 111 immediately.”

Call 111 when you need an emergency response from police, fire or ambulance.
