Plans for Hawea Bike Park revealedConcept plans for the new bike park show a range of features, from pump tracks to mini jump lines.

Bike Wanaka has revealed plans for an all-abilities bike park in Hawea which could open as soon as August this year.

The Hawea Bike Park will be located on the corner of Domain Road and Noema Terrace on land leased to Bike Wanaka by Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC).

“The park aligns with QLDC’s ten year vision of creating vibrant communities, and we envisage the Hawea Bike Park to be a hub for the children and youth of the Hawea community,” Bike Wanaka secretary Jo Goodwin said.

It is “a place to meet and connect with friends and a place to be physically active and develop life long biking skills,” she said.

The park will have five main areas.

These will include: a ‘pump’ track - a starting area which provides fun for all abilities; a kids’ mini jump line - a learning area for jumps which will feature three progression options; a medium jump line - a bigger jump progression for confident riders; and a ‘flow’ line - a progression from the pump track, this will be a gravity track with berms, pumps, and bumps.

There will also be a skills area: a series of small skill based features to encourage better handling skills.

Local trail-building contractor Dirt Dynamics will re-commence work in alert level two, and Bike Wanaka is hoping to have the park open for riding in August .

The club is grateful to the Contact Epic Community Fund for funding the concept plans and park design, Jo said, adding that Bike Wanaka is currently seeking funds to assist the club with the build costs.

After “years of planning”, it was exciting to reveal the plans for the park, Jo said.
