A walker has been airlifted from the Mt Iron track today by helicopter.

Police were called about 12.20pm (Tuesday January 3) to Mt Iron following a report of someone having sustained an injury while walking.

A police spokesperson said a helicopter was arranged to retrieve them due to access issues.

An onlooker said the Otago Rescue Helicopter landed on the west side of Mt Iron, then hovered for some time before winching the person up.

A St John spokesperson said one person was taken to Lakes District Hospital in Queenstown.
