A local balloon landing last week has been called “a perfect landing” by the balloon company, although it caused some surprise to road users.
The Adventure Balloons NZ balloon landed on Kane Road (up from the Luggate Red Bridge) near a carpark.
Adventure Balloons NZ co-owner Michaela Church told the Wānaka App it was “a perfect landing”.
“We see no issues with that landing at all,” she said.
“The pilot chose to land there. It was simply… that there was a nice clean car park on the side of the road. The pilots are trained to land somewhere that is considered safe and easy to access for packing up of the balloon.
“The weather was what would have been considered perfect for ballooning on that day. It was not a hard, difficult, or unusual landing, it was a perfect landing.”
NZTA spokesperson Andy Knackstedt said there were no legislative requirements for balloons landing on roadsides.
“More likely a general prohibition on blocking the roadway/obstructing traffic,” he said, adding that NZTA was not in a position to comment on the specific case.
Ten passengers were treated for minor injuries after an Adventure Balloons NZ balloon had what the company described as a “speedy landing” in Queensberry last December.
