Nine-piece jazz ensemble to perform in WānakaTrumpeter Ralph Miller will lead the nonet.

A nine-piece ensemble of top jazz musicians from Dunedin and Christchurch are set to perform ‘Rebirth of the Cool’ in Wānaka tomorrow (Sunday September 4).

Playing at the Lake Wānaka Centre the ensemble will be led by Ralph Miller, principal trumpet at the Dunedin Symphony Orchestra.

Rebirth of the Cool recreates the music and atmosphere of the original ‘Birth of the Cool’ session recorded by Miles Davis and a host of legendary musicians of the Bebop era.

Recorded from 1949-50, these compositions showcase the arranging talents of Gerry Mulligan and Gill Evans, who expanded the format of the small combo (small jazz band) into a nonet (a nine-piece ensemble) that originally included a french horn and tuba.

The newly formed nonet will expand upon these original compositions and present a range of unique and original solos.

Rebirth of the Cool is a collaboration between the Wānaka Concert Society and the Dunedin Jazz Club.

The performance will take place at the Lake Wānaka Centre tomorrow at 4.00pm.

Tickets are available at Gifted Design on Helwick Street or online here. School pupils free.
