Wānaka man Tom Finden is taking a swim in Lake Wānaka every day for four weeks to help raise awareness and funds for the Mental Health Foundation.
Tom, a real estate agent, says he’s aware of how many people struggle with their mental health.
“It’s a massively worthy cause in today’s society. New Zealand’s mental health stats are no secret and it's devastating to see how hard it can be to get help,” he said.
The ‘4 weeks cold cheeks’ challenge is designed to encourage people to break their day-to-day habits, build mental strength and help change their outlook.
“A cold plunge is the first battle of the day, if you can get up early and get into that freezing water, there's not much you can't do in the rest of your day.”
Chilling out in Lake Wānaka.
Tom says cold therapy has been proven to elevate mood and help the body’s nervous system.
“It’s a great holistic treatment that helps with depression.”
Anyone is welcome to join Tom and get their ‘cheeks’ cold in the chilly waters of the lake at 7am weekdays until September 16.
People are welcome to drop in for one dip or take the plunge and join the whole challenge. Find more information here or support Tom in his mission here.
