A new medical practice is scheduled to open in Wānaka early in the new year.
WellSouth Primary Health Network CEO Andrew Swanson-Dobbs welcomed the development of the new medical centre.
“Increasing the capacity of healthcare in rural areas is good news,” he said.
"We've been supporting the team and look forward to working with them in the future."
Concerns have been raised recently about the pressure on local primary health services.
Despite a rapidly expanding population, the Upper Clutha is currently served by only two GP practices in one location, both of which reduced after hours care last winter.

Many locals find it difficult to see a doctor at short notice, and a survey earlier this year of local seniors (65+) found that access to healthcare was a top concern.
Forty-seven percent of respondents identified wait times as a barrier to accessing their local GP.

Cardrona Doctors spokesperson Andrew Wilson confirmed to the Wānaka App that the new practice will open on Brownston Street in February.
