Netball: MANC A fall just short against Men's teamGround Up Brewing Men GD Chris Gilfedder using his height and elevation to intercept the pass into MANC GA Olivia Jones.

The MANC A netball team lost 46-39 against the Ground Up Brewing Men’s team on Friday (June 25) night at the Wanaka Recreation Centre.

The sides were locked at 20-20 at halftime and an upset looked possible despite the men having a significant height advantage over the younger women’s side.

MANC A used their speed and fitness well in the first half but found the height and physicality of the men a hurdle too far.

This was the last match for the men against the Netball Upper Clutha A grade teams as they are not eligible to challenge for the competition under Netball New Zealand rules. Netball Upper Clutha is looking further afield to find competitive matches for the men and will host a men’s side on Sunday July 11.

“There are also men’s competitions coming up in Dunedin and Christchurch and we’re looking at the possibility of our men competing there,” Netball Upper Clutha president Tracey Gibson said.

The women’s sides will begin the last round of the regular season this week with the top four sides to play in the semi finals August 12 and 13.
