Two Te Kura o Tititea Mount Aspiring College (MAC) swimmers made a big splash at the recent New Zealand Secondary Schools (NZSS) Swimming Championships, bringing home a remarkable haul of eight medals including six golds, and setting new records along the way.
Sophia McClintock and Hana Carnie, both competing in the 13-year-old girls' section, represented MAC with distinction on the national stage, following their outstanding performances at National Age Group Champs in April.
Hana dominated the backstroke events, claiming gold in the 50m, 100m, and 200m backstroke, as well as taking out the 100m freestyle.
In doing so, she shaved even more time off her own Otago Age Group 50m and 200m backstroke record, continuing her streak of strong performances in the pool.
Sophia showcased her power across butterfly events. She won gold in the 50m and 100m butterfly, narrowly missed a third title in the 200m butterfly, finishing just 0.02 seconds behind the winner to claim silver, and added a bronze in the 100m freestyle.
Sophia also broke the Otago Age Group 50m Butterfly record, a standout achievement at a national meet.
The duo also teamed up to compete in the U18 2x50m relay, holding their own against older and more experienced swimmers to finish 11th overall out of 56 teams and claiming 2nd in the U15 age group.
