Woolworths New Zealand has received resource consent for its supermarket in Three Parks, bringing Wānaka a step closer to gaining a second large-scale supermarket chain - and more choice for local shoppers.
The new supermarket, which was approved earlier this month, will be located on Sir Tim Wallis Drive in Three Parks, on the south side of Mitre 10 MEGA - opposite New World Three Parks.
“We are excited to have reached this important milestone, and look forward to moving into the next phase of design and development,” Woolworths New Zealand director of property Matthew Grainger told the Wānaka App.
He did not give an opening date but he said the 3,900sqm supermarket had been designed “to meet the needs of the growing local community”.
“It will feature an online delivery hub and an eight-bay direct-to-boot facility.”
The supermarket will be located on Sir Tim Wallis Drive (blue shaded area).
As well as the supermarket itself, the development will include 200sqm of separate retail, food or beverage tenancies.
He said the development included a “unique architectural feature on the corner of the building [which] will mirror the silhouette of Mt Iron in the background”.
While the new supermarket will be the first large-scale one by the company in the Upper Clutha, it will be the third under the Woolworths brand.
A Woolworths Metro (a smaller, convenience-focused format) opened on Anderson Road in 2021 and last year a FreshChoice (a franchise also under the Woolworths umbrella) opened in Lake Hāwea.
The Upper Clutha also has two New World supermarkets and around half a dozen other grocery/convenience stores.
