People in the Southern district can receive their Covid vaccinations at a range of locations over the Christmas and New Year’s period, the Southern District Health Board (SDHB) says.

“As people are more mobile over the holiday season, it is important that holiday makers take advantage of local vaccination clinics at their holiday location to ensure that their vaccinations are up to date,” SDHB Covid-19 vaccine rollout programme lead Karl Metzler said.

People requiring a first dose, or who are due for their second dose or booster vaccination are encouraged to seek out a local option.

“Remember that if it has been six months since your second dose, you are eligible for a booster shot so you stay protected,” Karl said.

Wānaka Medical Centre and Aspiring Medical Centre offer bookings and walk-ins from January 5 onwards, from 9am – 5pm.

To avoid queues, people are encouraged to book online at bookmyvaccine or by calling 0800 28 29 26. 

In early 2022, people will be eligible to receive their booster dose four months after their second dose, and the SDHB will have more information soon about when these will be available, Karl said.

He said he understands that many of the people who have not yet received their vaccinations may be feeling anxious or have questions. Karl said there are safe spaces at vaccination clinics to talk with a trained clinician; people can talk to staff at vaccinating pharmacies; call 0800 28 29 26; or speak to a trusted health professional such as their GP.

“It is also crucially important that we are all prepared for the possibility that your whānau or household is exposed to Covid over the holiday break. This includes having a plan for if you are away from home,” he said.
