Christmas will ‘come alive’ in Wānaka this Friday night (December 1) with the Lighting of the Community Christmas Tree event at the Dinosaur Park on the Wānaka lakefront.
As well as the lighting of the giant tree the occasion is billed as a fun, family event with entertainment and music from local schools and performers, and there might even be an appearance from Santa.
“This amazing community event is for everyone to come and enjoy an evening of Christmas music in the park,” event spokesperson and QLDC relationship manager arts and events Jan Maxwell said.
This will be the first time the Wānaka Christmas tree - an artificial tree decorated for locals’ enjoyment each year - will be located at Dinosaur Park, having historically been erected on the lawn at the Wānaka Hotel.
Jan said the move is a trial to bring the tree closer to the community.
“We wanted to trial moving it to the lakefront, next to the park, community BBQ and playground to encourage more families through December to enjoy the festivities,” she said.
On Friday entertainment will begin at 6pm with music performances from students at Holy Family School and Te Kura O Take Kārara, as well as Jacki B & The Mini Band and Tai Forrester.
“We’re expecting a big turnout, so we hope to see you there opening the festive season here in Wānaka,” Jan said.
“Cosy in with a picnic blanket or bring your lawn chairs and we highly encourage busting out your festive attire to get into the Christmas spirit.”
The annual lighting of the Christmas tree will take place this Friday (December 1) at the Dinosaur Park. Entertainment will begin at 6pm and the lighting of the tree will take place at 8pm.
The tree will be on display until December 27.
This event is organised by the Queenstown Lakes District Council.
