Police have revealed the person killed in a crash between a car and a push bike in Wānaka on Saturday (July 6) was a 25-year-old tourist from Japan.


The Central App reported that Senior Constable Graham Perkins of Alexandra said the man was travelling down the wrong side of Plantation Rd on his bike when he collided with a car which had been making a left hand turn into Plantation Rd. Graham said the motorist veered to the left to avoid the cyclist who was travelling at speed towards the vehicle but he hit the driver's door.


The man was not wearing a helmet and no charges will be laid because the driver of the car was not at fault.


The man was declared dead at the scene of the crash which occurred at 3.50pm at the intersection of Plantation Road and Anderson Road.


Police, first responders and the Otago Southland Rescue Helicopter attended the crash. The helicopter service was not required for transportation.


The Serious Crash Unit examined the scene and a police investigation into the cause of the crash is underway.
