Seventeen days of world class snowsports events have wrapped up with the completion of Winter Games NZ 2023.
During Winter Games NZ, more than 450 athletes from 38 nations competed at local skifields including Cardrona Alpine Resort, Coronet Peak, and The Remarkables.
Across 15 events the athletes competed for Junior World Championship titles, Alpine World Cup yellow bibs, Freeride World Qualifier points, and the Obsidian Edgar Challenge Trophy.
“It was an epic two and a half weeks of action at the biggest snow sports event in the Southern Hemisphere,” Winter Games NZ said in a statement.
Events include Alpine Ski Racing, Park & Pipe, the North Face Frontier *2 and 4* (Freeride) and Obsidian, a brand new event.
During Obsidian, teams made up of the best freeski and snowboard athletes from four continents battled it out across custom built terrain park venues at Cardrona Alpine Resort and freeride terrain in the mountains around Wānaka.
Winter Games NZ CEO Marty Toomey said the aim was for Obsidian to become a ‘must-do’ event on the calendar for the world's best skiers and snowboarders.
“Team events are rare in snow sports and our creative challenges make Obsidian a fun event for athletes to compete in and for fans to watch."
Winter Games NZ will be back in 2024.
“We wish all our athletes a successful 2023/24 Northern Hemisphere winter and look forward to seeing you back in New Zealand next year,” the organisation said in a statement.
