Organisers of a series of car boot sales starting soon hope plenty of locals will want to get involved, either by heading along as a visitor or holding a stall.
The first car boot sale will take place at the A&P Showgrounds on October 1 and they will run every fortnight through to the end of February, Wānaka-Upper Clutha Lions Club project director Sue Sewell told the Wānaka App.
“The Lions ladies are baking up a storm and we are collecting books and anything we can get from our members,” she said.
“We are hoping we will get a lot of support from the locals.”
The club is leading the project with support from the Upper Clutha’s second Lions, called Wānaka Lions Club.
The Wānaka-Upper Clutha Lions Club raises money for a range of initiatives by holding raffles, selling lily bulbs and christmas cakes, among others, but the car boot sale series will be the first of its kind.
Money raised by the club goes back into the community, with the club regularly providing financial support provided to young people going on Outward Bound and Spirit of Adventure; sending two Te Kura o Tititea Mount Aspiring College students to leadership course each year; and one-off projects like last year’s donation of new appliances and a training mannequin to St John.

Sue said she couldn’t yet say what the car boot sales would support but, like all other fundraisers, it would support something in the community.
“We’ve got a project in mind but it’s a bit too early to talk about it.”
The events will be located in what is known as the ‘horse paddock’ on the A&P Showgrounds, accessed via McDougall Street.
Anyone who wants to sell at any of the car boot sales can just show up on the day between 8am and 9am with $20 cash for the stall fee.
The events will open to the public at 9am and run until 1pm - cash only.
