In a targeted effort to curb high-risk driving behaviours, Otago Lakes Road Policing conducted a rigorous operation on the Crown Range Road yesterday (Tuesday, December 12).
The operation spanned the Crown Range Road and the Cardrona Valley Road resulting in numerous vehicle stops and the issuance of multiple infringements.
Otago Lakes Road Policing Sergeant Dylan Hannah-Jones said 22 infringements were handed out to drivers engaged in activities such as crossing the centre line and executing unsafe passing maneuvers.
“This type of high-risk behaviour puts our families, communities and visitors at risk,” he said.
“Driving while distracted, speeding, and failing to wear your seatbelt are all behaviours that increase the risk of crashes, which can result in serious injuries or even death.”
Two drivers were intercepted travelling at nearly twice the speed limit while navigating on the wrong side of the road through Cardrona village.
Beyond speeding violations, the police issued an additional ten infringements for various offences including mobile phone use while driving and failure to wear seatbelts.
Dylan urged motorists to exercise patience and adhere to the prevailing road conditions.
“We need our community to do their bit by driving safely, being patient and making good decisions behind the wheel,” he said.
According to a police statement, for every one kilometre per hour reduction in average speed, there is a six percent reduction in fatal crash risk. A reduction of five kilometres per hour could result in a 30 percent decrease in the risk of fatal crashes.
