It was a busy weekend celebrating the Wānaka A&P Show. The show highlights our rural and agricultural sector seeing attendees travel from all over the South Island to attend.
This year was a huge success with police prevention teams from Wānaka and Queenstown attending the event and assisting with planning.
It was disappointing to see six intoxicated drivers apprehended over Friday and Saturday nights with one driver blowing over 1100mcgs.
With a busy town and roads over the weekend it places significant risk upon other road users. Police urge anyone who is going out to plan their trip home by having a designated sober driver or by making use of the taxi services available in Wānaka.
Thanks to information provided by the community, police were able to identify an anti-social road user who was doing skids in a gravel carpark causing stones to scatter towards vehicles and members of the public. The vehicle has been impounded and the driver is being dealt with by Youth Aid Wānaka.
Police encourage the continued reporting of incidents in the community. Just a reminder that non-urgent events can be reported at the station, by phoning 105 and online here.
The Wānaka Search & Rescue team continue to be busy with four rescue operations last week and five the previous week. Police would like to remind the public that when enjoying the outdoors, please take the time to plan accordingly, check the weather and make sure that you have sufficient warm clothes and supplies for the conditions. A big thank you to the volunteers who give up their spare time. We are fortunate to have a professional and dedicated team in Wānaka.
The Wānaka Police Prevention Team are enjoying spending time in Makarora and building partnerships in the community.
Police continue to work closely with the retailers and are continuing to identify and apprehend shoplifters.
Take care everyone. Have a great week.
