Huge turnout for Wānaka’s ‘sensational show’Thousands of people turned up to Wānaka’s annual show.

Wānaka welcomed at least 44,000 people to the 86th Wānaka A&P Show this weekend, after a two-year hiatus.

Organisers of the anticipated annual show – one of the South Island’s premier lifestyle and rural events – were thrilled with the turnout, particularly after last year’s cancellation due to Covid-19. It was the first cancellation in the show’s 85-year history.

Wānaka Show event manager Jane Stalker said it was fantastic to see the Upper Clutha community celebrating together again.

“It was great to see so many families out and about and socialising, and just enjoying all of the wonderful activities and entertainment that we had on offer at this year’s show,” she said.

“We’ve had people from all walks of life attend the event and we feel rapt seeing communities from all over the country.”

Livestock events were a highlight of the show.

The Wānaka A&P Show is the largest two-day show in the South Island and a fixture on the calendar for Upper Clutha locals and visitors to the region.

The 2023 show welcomed an entertainment line-up of 14 different acts, including country-rock artist Cam Scott and celebrity chef Annabelle White.

The traditional equestrian and livestock events were also a highlight, along with 526 trade exhibitors.

“The equestrian competition was spectacular," Jane said.

“The show attracted some exceptional riders and horses this year, who normally would have travelled to Horse of the Year instead.

"It was also great to see the cattle, sheep and other livestock displays, as well as providing an opportunity to show non-rural folk the many wonderful aspects of the agricultural sector.”

The world-famous K9 Natural Jack Russell race saw 90 Jack Russells compete in the quirky race, with Wānaka terrier Archie taking out first place.

“The Life & Style Marquee was also an impressive part of this year’s show,” Jane said.

“The feedback we have received from show-goers was that they really enjoyed the food, wine and fashion showcases. Annabelle White was a delight.

“Overall, it’s been another sensational show and we are very grateful to everyone who attended and helped to produce the event, including the show’s remarkable volunteers.”

Jane said there were more than 400 community groups and volunteers this year, “which is fantastic”.

Next year’s Wānaka A&P Show will be held on March 8-9, 2024.
