Kahu Youth’s annual ‘Takin’ Over Amigos’ event is back for the 12th year in a row - and it starts tonight (Wednesday June 17).
The annual event sees young people from Kahu Youth taking over the running of Amigos Restaurant for several nights, giving them the opportunity to get hands-on restaurant experience while also raising funds for Kahu Youth.
“It's a bit last minute and a month later than usual due to the COVID close-down, but we're doing it again,” Kahu Youth’s Richard Elvey said.
Fancy a night of Mexican food while supporting a good cause?
Call Amigos to book for one of the Kahu Youth takeover nights, which are today and tomorrow (Wednesday June 17 and 18) and the same days next week (Wednesday June 24 and 25).
Richard said the event had grown significantly since its inception more than a decade ago.
“This wonderful initiative began small back in 2008 and has grown to the four night event it now is, involving over 20 young people who clean and set up the restaurant, take orders, make drinks, help out where they can in the kitchen and generally have a great time,” he said.
Amigos donates half the takings from each night to Kahu Youth, which over the years has resulted in donations “well in excess” of $10,000, Richard said. Last year alone the event raised $2,500.
Kahu Youth is a local programme which engages with Upper Clutha youth by involving them in productive, learning and fun activities and programmes. It’s space, The Crib, reopened in late May after having to close during the COVID-19 lockdown.
Richard encourages members of the community to take part in the Takin’ Over Amigos event.
“Come and eat some yummy food in a great place, an incredible atmosphere, be entertained by your local young people and support your local youth service all in one go – you will not regret it,” he says.
