Young player stands out at bowls awardsHāwea Bowling Club president Lawrence Hardy, club member Ethan Flynn and men’s competition committee convenor Jim Cowie.

The Hāwea Bowling Club has celebrated its annual awards night, which showed a clear frontrunner in one of the club’s younger members.

Ethan Flynn celebrated the rare feat of winning all five of the men’s trophies for the season.

He won both the Junior and Open Men’s Singles titles as well as being a member of the winning teams in the Pairs, Triples, and Fours.

To cap the season, Ethan skipped the winning Hāwea team which won the Central Otago Men’s Fours title.

Other members of the winning team were Kyle McGowan, Joel Corry, and Arthur Sutherland.

Club president Lawrence Hardy congratulated Ethan and all the other trophy winners.

“It’s been great to see our fairly small club doing so well,” Lawrence said.

“And Ethan’s success shows that lawn bowls is nowadays a game for players of all ages.”

Before the new bowling season starts in September, the club will be actively looking for new members to further strengthen the playing numbers.

The long-running local club reopened in February after a long closure while the playing green (located at the Lake Hāwea Community Centre at Peter Fraser Park) was relaid.

The club holds regular get-togethers and hosts of tournaments and meets.
