Sport Central is inviting coaches, managers, teachers and parents to learn about head injuries and mental health in sport at a series of free seminars taking place next month.
Events will take place in Wānaka, Alexandra, Cromwell, and Queenstown with expert speakers at each of them.
Sport Central community sport advisor Jo Knight said both issues were topical.
“If a close friend or someone in your family is suffering from either the injury or the illnesses, you will understand the importance of getting the correct information and treatment,” Sport Central community sport advisor Jo Knight said.
While head injuries and concussions are most often associated with rugby, they can also happen during mountain biking, playing cricket, during snowboarding or skiing, and “plenty of other codes”.
Speakers at the upcoming events will include Kate Mossman, a head injury researcher who has managed her own concussion, Jo said.
Shawn Hicks, a former professional cricketer who has given up the game and is now coaching, will also discuss his recovery from concussions.
The third speaker, Barry Grehan, will discuss mental health and ‘mental health first aid’.
“Barry will speak about what to look out for in your family and friends, when they suffer mental health issues and how we can help be the ‘first aider’ in this situation,” Jo said.
The Wānaka event will take place on Tuesday November 14 at the Wānaka Squash Club at 7pm.
All events are free thanks to sponsorship by Craig Investment Partners. Drinks and light refreshments will be provided.
