Woolworths Metro Wānaka will close at the end of the month, the company has confirmed.
The small-scale grocery store - formerly Countdown Metro Wānaka - has operated from the former BP on Ardmore Street since late 2021.
“We’ve seen declining customer demand at the store and, with news of the resource consent for a new full service supermarket at Three Parks, we’ve decided to close the Metro store,” a Woolworths spokesperson told the Wānaka App.
“Its last day of trading will be 31 August and we’re working closely with our team to continue their careers with Woolworths.”
Local shoppers have been able to collect their online Woolworths grocery orders at the local Woolworths Metro, or have them delivered.
The spokesperson indicated online orders would still be possible for Wānaka customers once the Metro closed.
“...we’ll be communicating shortly to our customers about options for them, including delivery from our Alexandra store,” they said.
Plans are well underway for a much larger 3,900sqm supermarket at Three Parks.
That supermarket will open some time in 2027, the spokesperson said.
