A woman ran into Lake Wānaka last night (Thursday February 27) to evade a police checkpoint.

At around 5.25pm on Thursday the woman failed to stop at a checkpoint on Lakeside Road, “and fled from police on foot, into the lake”, a police spokesperson told the Wānaka App.

“The person was assisted out of the water with the help of a member of the public. No injuries are reported,” they said. 

A 45-year-old woman is due to appear in Queenstown District Court on Monday (March 3), facing charges in relation to the incident.
