Following the discovery of the body of a homeless man in his 60s at the Upper Clutha Rugby Showgrounds on May 11, Wanaka’s Community Networks has commented in general on the issue of homelessness in the township.
In addition to the man who was found dead, there have been other reports of homeless people in Wanaka in recent weeks and people should expect to see more of it, Community Networks Wanaka social worker Heather Clay told the Wanaka App.
“Homelessness is not unique to Wānaka, but it is something we will continue to see more of as the town grows.”
Heather said homelessness is also a complex issue – there are many reasons why someone may be homeless, and there is no single solution.
“It is a multi-sector, multi-agency issue, and therefore any likely response will be as well.”
In many cases, homeless individuals are already known to health and welfare services.

“If you are concerned about a particular individual’s safety, welfare or behaviour, then you can contact local police to request a welfare check. The police can put that person in contact with the appropriate community services,” she said.
“You could also offer them some food, a hot drink, or ask if they need warm clothing or blankets.”
Heather recommended the Community Networks website as a good place to start for anyone seeking information on the range of services available locally, which include the foodbank, financial advice, government agencies like WINZ, referrals to social workers and mental health providers, and more.
Alternatively people can ring Community Networks on 443 7799 or call in to see the team based at the Wānaka Community Hub, 34 McDougall Street.
