The Wanaka AFC premier football team scored a 3-1 win over Caversham in the Southern Premier League on Saturday (July 11) to record their second win of the season.
Played in Dunedin in warm sunny conditions, Wanaka dominated the second half of the match after trailing 0-1 at the half time break.
Under pressure early, Wanaka conceded in the 11th minute and managed to defend a number of half chances by Caversham.
Wanaka settled late in the half with Paul Hodgson, Adam Hewson and Everton Furby all getting shots on goal which were comfortably saved by the Caversham goalkeeper.
With Caversham playing into a low setting sun Wanaka showed more purpose in the second half, scoring early off a Weston Bell free kick which deflected to lively striker Hewson to put the ball in the back of the net.
Adam Hewson continued to trouble the Caversham defence, providing space for wide players Toa Roode and Hodgson who had strong matches for Wanaka. Hewson scored again in the 85th minute and Wanaka added a late goal to Toa Roode after a length of the field break out.
Toa Roode had a fine match for Wanaka in his first start this season, and Hewson was a constant threat.
After four rounds Wanaka is sitting fourth in the nine team competition. This Saturday they host Dunedin Tech at the Wanaka Recreation Centre for a 2.45pm kick off.
