Local members of a global running and walking network, Parkrun, will host the 250th Parkrun Wānaka event this Saturday morning (October 21).
Wherever in the world you are taking part, Parkrun events have the same formula: a 5km timed run or walk, inclusive for all abilities.
In Wānaka, the event begins at Wānaka Station Park every Saturday morning.
Wānaka Parkrun event director said the weekly activity continues to increase in popularity.
"Reaching our 250th parkrun is an incredible milestone,” Wānaka Parkrun event director Katy Macpherson said.
“It's a testament to the strong sense of community we have here in Wānaka and the importance of staying active and connected.”
She said the participants range “from babies in prams and toddlers running alongside their parents to our oldest regular in their 80s”.
Wānaka Parkrun began in 2018.
Adam and Jane Sharman had enjoyed participating in Parkrun events in Auckland so much that when they moved to Wānaka they decided to bring it with them.
Katy is encouraging people to come along to next Saturday’s milestone Parkrun and give it a go.
“We invite everyone, from avid runners to first-timers, to join us in celebrating,” she said.
“There is no time-limit to finish so it does not matter how slowly someone may walk, there will always be a welcoming team of volunteers at the finish.”
The 250th Parkrun will also feature special activities and surprises for participants.
