Six Wānaka cyclists have been named in the New Zealand team to attend the Cycling World Championships in Scotland in August.
Touted as the ‘biggest cycling event ever’, the championships will feature 13 cycling disciplines competing over 11 days, incorporating road and track, mountain bike and BMX.
Wānaka women Kim Cadzow (Jumbo-Visma) and Mikayla Harvey (UAE-Team Emirates) will compete in the elite and under-23 combined women's road race, while Muireann Green (Black Magic Women’s Cycling) will compete in the women's junior road race and Carter Guichard (AG2R Citroen) in the men’s junior road race.
Mountain biker Kalani Muirhead will compete in the women’s downhill event and her brother Tyler will compete in the junior men's downhill.
Promising junior Muireann Green (17) is currently riding for Netherlands-based team Watersley R&D, and holds both the U19 women's National Criterium and Time Trial titles.
“It [the championships] is an opportunity to learn, grow, and gain exposure on the international stage,” Muireann said.
“This will be my second time wearing the silver fern. It’s an incredible feeling and signifies a significant step towards my goal of becoming a professional cyclist.”
Fellow junior rider Carter (16) is currently in Year 12 at Te Kura o Tititea Mt Aspiring College (MAC) and has been selected to ride for the AG2R-Citroen U19 team in Europe where he managed a credible third placing in the Tour Cyclist Region du Sud stage three.
“As a first-year junior and one of the youngest riders in the U19 field, I’m super proud to have been selected to wear the New Zealand jersey,” Carter said.
Former MAC student and Olympic and Commonwealth medallist Ellesse Andrews will also compete in Glasgow as part of the New Zealand track cycling team.
The Cycling World Championships will run August 3-13, 2023. Find out more here.
