Volcano-like smoke plume from burnoff The smoke plume appears to come from a vent on Roys Peak when seen from Treble Cone.

A controlled burnoff at Jolly Road, between Luggate and Tarras, attracted attention for the shape of the smoke plume as well as the amount of smoke this afternoon (Thursday August 27).

Fire and Emergency NZ (FENZ) was aware of the planned burnoff, and told the Wanaka App the fire remained under control throughout the afternoon. A FENZ spokesperson said the fire was likely to burn until nightfall.

There was a helicopter on site as a precaution.

The billowing smoke, suggestive of smoke from a volcano, was visible from around the district.

Controlled burnoffs are a common farming practice at this time of the year.

Otago Regional Council (ORC) regulatory acting general manager Peter Winder said this time last year that outdoor burning may require a permit from the local district or city council, FENZ and in some cases, the Department of Conservation.

In all cases, the burnoff must also comply with any ORC Air Plan rules.

“Vegetation burn-offs are allowed under our Air Plan - and they may also be permitted by other authorities - but they will be in breach of our rules if they lead to smoke, odour or particulate that may be offensive or objectionable beyond property boundaries,” Peter said.
