Updated Wednesday March 13: Due to forecast wet weather the repair work on the Gates of Haast Bridge has been moved to Tuesday March 18. The road will be closed on that day from 8am-5pm with an opening at midday to 1pm for traffic to pass through.

People using the Haast Pass on Thursday March 14 will face lengthy delays due to 'significant repairs' to the Gates of Haast bridge.

The single-lane bridge on SH6 is getting a new concrete dish channel, new handrails and posts and resurfaced bridge approaches. The work needs to be completed before winter NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi said.

The bridge will be closed from 8am to 5pm on Thursday March 14 with a midday opening from 12pm to 1pm.

The work is weather dependent so if it is wet, it may be pushed to the next dry day Waka Kotahi said.

Electronic signs will confirm the closure at either side of the bridge at key towns.
