After undertaking enquiries overnight, police are satisfied that there was only one occupant in the car which crashed off Ōhau B Canal Bridge near High Country Salmon in the Mackenzie Country yesterday (Sunday January 15).

The driver of the car, a 29-year-old man, was recovered by the Police National Dive Squad yesterday evening.

The car was located in the canal earlier in the day Sunday, however the Police National Dive Squad did not find any bodies in the vehicle.

The body retrieved was nearby.

The crash was reported to police at 6.50am yesterday and an extensive search involving police, coastguard and FENZ was activated.

Enquiries into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing, and if anyone witnessed the crash and has not yet spoken to police, they would like to hear from them.
