Update: Pair airlifted from Mt Earnslaw following avalancheAn individual has been injured on MT Earnslaw

Two people have now been airlifted from Mt Earnslaw following an avalanche earlier this morning, NZ Police have confirmed.


One of the individuals sustained moderate injuries and Queenstown Search and Rescue (SAR) acted as lead responders in the incident. 


Police were alerted to the avalanche at 7.56am.



Earlier:


A person has been injured following an avalanche at Mt Aspiring National Park.


Police were alerted to the avalanche, on Mt Earnslaw, at 7.56am today (Friday February 12) and the individual has moderate injuries, the NZ Herald reported.



Wanaka police representative Alan Lee confirmed at 9.37am that “the incident is still live”.


Queenstown Police Search and Rescue (SAR) are the lead responders in the incident.


A helicopter has been dispatched as part of the rescue. 


Wanaka SAR is on standby but has not been deployed, Alan said.
