Top ranked players to contest Wānaka Squash OpenLwamba and Temwa Chileshe are ranked number two and four in New Zealand.

Three of New Zealand’s top ranked men's squash players will be in Wānaka this weekend to contest the Wānaka Squash Open.

New Zealand team members Lwamba Chileshe and Temwa Chileshe will join Oliver Johnston in the open draw. Brothers Lwamba and Temwa have been selected to represent New Zealand at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games.

“Lwamba and Temwa are ranked second and fourth, behind world squash champion Paul Coll amongst New Zealand male players,” Wānaka Squash Club president Tony Johnston said.

“They have recently returned from playing professionally in England and will be in top form.”

Oliver is ranked sixth on the New Zealand list and brings a lot of experience to the open, Tony said.

“This will be the strongest men’s draw in the forty year history of the club,” he said.

Just one local, Alan Wainwright, is in the eight-man open draw and is one of three doctors vying for the title.

The Women’s Open will feature the very promising Grace Hymers as its number one seed. Grace was awarded most promising New Zealand junior female player in 2021.

The Wānaka Squash Open takes place this Queen’s Birthday Weekend at the Wānaka Squash Club with the semi finals scheduled for Saturday (June 4) afternoon and the finals on Sunday (June 5) afternoon.
