Te Kura O Tititea Mount Aspiring College’s (MAC) hockey team had a winning streak at a five day (August 25-29) tier four secondary schools hockey tournament played at Dunedin’s Otago Polytechnic.
Up against senior mixed teams from schools around the country, the local hockey players won every game to claim the tournament’s Kate Trovole Cup.
MAC started well with an 11-0 win against Geraldine High School before an even stronger win against Maniototo Area School (13-0).
In a tighter match they kept Glenfield scoreless, winning 2-0.
In the semi-finals, MAC achieved another 2-0 win against Garin College, qualifying for the final.
The final was an exciting, fast-paced - and at times close game against Maruwai College. At half time, the sides were locked at 0-0.
MAC scored its first goal in the third quarter and added another two goals in the fourth quarter, to win the final 3-1.
The MAC team was co-captained by Hugh Ragg and Dot Anderson. Team members are Angus Ives, Dom Franks, Finn Jones, Charlie Blampied, Tanyn Wood, Sam Smith, Ben Quarrie, Isaac Quarrie, Mikayla Botting, Katie Power, and Hope Green, plus goalies Eddie Ives and Denali Emmitt.
The side is coached by Suzie Cochrane and Will Anderson, and Angela Power is the team manager.
Suzie thanked the team for “a week of top notch hockey and lots of fun on and off the turf”.
“You played 'your game', were supportive of each other, showed great determination and commitment and played as a team coming away with the gold medal.”
She also thanked the people and businesses who had made attending the tournament possible.
