Tennis tournaments showcase young (and not-so-young) talentKai Milburn was the winner of the men's Stonewood Homes Open Tennis Tournament.

Wānaka Tennis Club’s New Year’s tournaments were well supported again this year and organisers were impressed with the high standard of the young players competing.

The Stonewood Homes Open (men's) was won by New Zealand under 16 number one Kai Milburn (Queenstown), who defended his title by defeating Jin Dassanayake. Jin has been playing college tennis in the United States.

The women’s singles was also won by the defending champion with Ruby Young (Christchurch) defeating Charlie Byers. They combined to win the doubles from mother and daughter combination, Felicity and Louise Oxnevad.

The men’s doubles was won by father and son Alistair and Lachlan Hunt, who defeated Ben Archbold and Kevin Li in the final.

In addition to the Open, Wānaka Tennis Club hosted the Craig’s Investment Partners Junior Tournament and the Quartz Reef +35 Tournament.

“[The tournaments] went really well, they were great,” Wānaka Tennis Club president Jeanette Hatten said.

“People love coming here.”

The junior tournament was played over four days from January 5-8 with players from around the country competing across four age groups from under 12 to under 18, while the +35 tournament was held over the weekend of January 13-14.

“We had a great number of entries and Saturday with the doubles had big numbers,” Jeanette said.

Jeanette said all the tournaments involve a great standard of tennis and provide an opportunity for the club to showcase the sport in Wānaka.
